Guest review from recent stay

Though snowmobiling is the recreation of choice for many visitors, Michigan's UP is a great getaway for silent sports too!  The Ottawa National Forest Office didn't have any "designated trails" for our winter activities but they pointed us in the right direction and gave us a few free maps.  We were able to find plenty of snow and get some great pictures- not to mention some great exercise in the woods!

Cross Country Skiing:

Wolverine Nordic had well-groomed and scenic trails. It was easy to find and really close to the condo - From Hwy 2, go N at the Wal-mart stoplight (Section 12 road). After about a mile, go R on Sunset and the parking lot is a 1/2 mile up on your right. $10 suggested donation. The warming house was nice and had a great log stove.

Bergland had a small loop just off 64 about a mile north of town. It wasn't groomed but was fun to break trail for half the loop and then head back on our tracks.

Black River Recreation - The waterfall hikes were fun and scenic. We accessed the trails along Black River Road.

Gogebic Ridge Trail - No lot plowed, but the trailhead had been cleared at least a few times. We drove up 64, N of Bergland and parked on the right. The trail connected on either side of the road. We had to break trail and try to follow white trail marker (on the trees) but were able to get through for a fun adventure.

North Country Trail - This trail runs from New York state to North Dakota. There were a few places in the area to jump on the trail.

Big Snow Country vs Lutsen

This blog post is named Big Snow Country vs Lutsen to make it overly obvious of what I am trying to accomplish. Since both of these areas are known for fantastic winter activities, I want to give everyone enough information to help them determine which is best for them.

Just so we are on all on the same page, I am defining Big Snow Country as Indianhead Mountain, Big Powderhorn Mountain and Blackjack Resort. Where appropriate you will see a breakout of details by each you can also look at this as:

Big Powderhorn Mountain vs Lutsen, Indianhead Mountain vs Lutsen, Blackjack vs Lutsen

I encourage you to check back often as I will make this a constantly evolving work in progress. Lastly, please don't hesitate to add comments, opinions or let me know if there is something else you would like to see compared between these two areas.
